Ancelotti – Don’t panic

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has urged his side not to push the panic button after having their advantage at the top of the Premier League cut to just two points.

The Blues threw away the lead to lose 2-1 at Manchester City on Saturday evening as Emmanuel Adebayor cancelled out his early own goal and Carlo Tevez won the game with a free-kick.

Defeat at Eastlands ended Ancelotti’s side’s five-game winning run and allowed Manchester United, who hammered West Ham earlier in the day, to close the gap at the top.

But the Italian is not overly concerned, saying: “We don’t have any reason to be worried.

“We are doing well at the moment but today it was difficult because Manchester City played very well.

Disappointed

“But we are still top of the league and we have two more points than Manchester United so we do not need anything extra.”

Chelsea, who saw Frank Lampard fail to earn a 2-2 draw when his late penalty was saved, were clearly unhappy at what they felt was a handball by Micah Richards immediately before Adebayor’s equaliser.

“We were disappointed with the referee,” Ancelotti said. “I am surprised because I consider Howard Webb to be a fantastic referee but we felt it was a handball by Richards.

“I did feel we deserved to draw, but we lost.”

Ancelotti confirmed skipper John Terry – who limped off with a knee injury near the end and left Eastlands on crutches – will be fit for next weekend, although he will almost certainly miss Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League tie with Apoel Nicosia.

City do United a favour

Manchester City did local rivals Manchester United a huge favour in the Premier League title race as a Carlos Tevez free-kick earned a 2-1 turnaround win over Chelsea at Eastlands.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Premier League leaders had gone in front in fortuitous circumstances through an Emmanuel Adebayor own goal, but the Togo international then scored at the correct end before Tevez sealed the victory in the second half.

Adebayor’s eighth minute mistake broke the deadlock in an engaging encounter as City failed to properly clear a generously awarded corner and their 25million striker deflected into his own net after Shay Given had parried a Nicolas Anleka drive.

But Mark Hughes’ home side had a deserved goal eight minutes before half-time as Adebayor stabbed an equaliser from close range, with Chelsea complaining about a reasonable appeal for handball against Micah Richards in the build-up.

Restoring parity shortly before the break gave City additional motivation and Tevez, formerly a United player, struck a 56th minute set-piece that proved enough to earn a first league victory in eight games.

The defeat could have been avoided had Frank Lampard not had a late penalty saved by Given, but the England international’s spot-kick failure cut Chelsea’s lead over defending champions United, who hammered West Ham earlier on Saturday, to two points.

However, that hardly told the story as bad tempered Chelsea went down in a hail of yellow cards – six in all – and skipper John Terry went off with a leg injury in the latter stages.

The two first-half goals were certainly not in keeping with a pulsating opening in which City more than matched their opponents without ever looking completely secure at the back.

Hughes’ troops had already been given one warning when Given turned away Didier Drogba’s angled drive.

Yet, when he looks at the replay, Hughes will probably conclude the main factor in Chelsea’s opener was complete bad luck.

Scramble

Drogba and Branislav Ivanovic could both have been more closely marked at the start of the scramble but the Blues survived that lapse when Given made his first save.

The ball bounced back to Anelka but Given got behind his shot too. However, the Republic of Ireland star could not legislate for the ball shooting upwards, striking Adebayor on the back and bobbling in.

As Chelsea should not have been awarded the corner which started the whole melee off in the first place, City could have been forgiven for believing it was not to be their day.

Far from it. They poured forward and if their delivery from set-pieces had been less persistent in picking out Petr Cech, the equaliser might have come long before it did.

Cech’s only mistake had been to come for a Shaun Wright-Phillips’ cross and get nowhere near as Richards rose. Ricardo Carvalho read the situation perfectly though and made a splendidly acrobatic clearance.

City kept up their offensive and when Wright-Phillips drove another shot into the Chelsea box it ultimately brought their equaliser.

Terry, who was linked so heavily with a move to Eastlands last summer, was still complaining to referee Howard Webb at half-time that Richards handled Wright-Phillips’ shot.

It was difficult to see what the England Under 21 full-back could have done to get out of the way though.

The ball deflected into Adebayor’s path and did so again when it bounced back off the England skipper. At the second time of asking Adebayor did not fail to make up for his earlier misfortune.

If Drogba’s free-kick in the final minute of the half had been one inch inside Given’s left-hand post rather than just outside it, City might have had problems responding.

Bad temper

As it was, they were the ones with the impetus when the sides returned and got their noses in front.

In keeping with the others, there was an element of controversy about the goal.

Ricardo Carvalho did have a point when he claimed he had been looking at the ball as he went for an aerial challenge with Tevez, but he also kept a leg in the air long enough to plant it into the Argentinean’s back.

Tevez added insult to the resulting yellow card though, curling a crisp free-kick into the bottom corner, with Terry berating Cech for allowing the ball to pass on his side.

The loss of Richards and Wayne Bridge to injury hardly assisted City in their efforts to cling on for a win, but Juliano Belletti’s studs-first challenge that led to Bridge being carried off could easily have left Chelsea with 10 men.

That bad-tempered tackle led to a few more. At one point Ashley Cole and Deco were booked for offences in the same passage of play.

Prior to that though, Given had emerged the hero when he turned away an admittedly poor Lampard penalty after Onuoha had upended Drogba.

There was still time for Terry to limp off and Drogba to waste a glorious chance to level at the death although City, and Given, deserved their success.

Terry excited by draw

England captain John Terry believes it will be key to start the World Cup on a winning note following the draw for next summer’s finals.

Terry will lead England out against USA on Saturday 12th June in Rustenburg before tackling Algeria and Slovenia in the remaining games in Group C.

USA are expected to pose the toughest test for Fabio Capello’s side in the first round and Terry admits it will be vital to secure a positive result from the match.

The Chelsea defender is excited by the draw for the tournament and is hoping past experience of playing USA and Slovenia will stand England in good stead.

Very exciting

“I was with my England and Chelsea team-mates Frank (Lampard), Joe (Cole) and Ashley (Cole) watching the draw,” Terry told the FA’s official website.

“We had just landed at Manchester ahead of our match against City tomorrow and watched the teams drawn from the bus on our way to the team hotel.

“It’s obviously very exciting with some great fixtures. As far as England are concerned we are familiar with two of our opponents – USA and Slovenia – and know their players well. Hopefully this will help us prepare for those games.

“England have never played Algeria and of course they got through to the finals with a play-off victory over Egypt.

“But for me, it’s all about that first game and getting off to a good start. Every team’s opening group match is important and we’re no different – it’s a big game.”

Terry welcomes the return of Chelsea’s fear factor

• Porto, Arsenal, Manchester City and Blackburn all loom
• ‘It’s a challenge title-winning teams rise to’ says John Terry

John Terry says Chelsea can illustrate their intent to win trophies at home and abroad over the next 12 days, as they embark on a sequence of four important away matches and the captain believes that their hopes have been bolstered by the return of the fear factor which once accompanied the team under José Mourinho.

Chelsea have responded positively to the appointment in the summer of Carlo Ancelotti as manager and they arrived in Portugal for tomorrow night’s Champions League Group D tie against Porto with qualification to the knockout phase already assured. In domestic competition, meanwhile, they are five points clear at the top of the Premier League and they are into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

“I really do think we are close to getting there,” Terry said. “When you listen to the other players, in other words when we are away with England, speaking about how well we are playing, they are fearing us again. They are confident that we are playing well and have a real chance of going on to do great things this year. I think we did have that when we were winning the Premier League [under Mourinho in 2005 & 2006]. It’s key we get that back.”

Although Porto have also qualified for the last 16, Terry and Ancelotti stressed the importance of what will be an exacting test here and, moreover, how they were determined to advance as the group winners. Chelsea will enter the Estádio do Dragão with 10 points to Porto’s nine.

The ex-Porto players Ricardo Carvalho and Deco will return as Ancelotti looks to freshen up his team, as will Branislav Ivanovic and Michael Ballack while there will be a start at left-back for Yuri Zhirkov. Ancelotti said that Michael Essien had a slight knee problem and would not start against Porto, although he would be fit for the Premier League trip to Arsenal on Sunday, which precedes the Carling Cup fixture at Blackburn Rovers and the Premier League game at Manchester City. Didier Drogba, who has recovered from badly damaged ribs, hopes to appear as a substitute to prove his fitness for Arsenal.

“It’s four away games in a row and that’s the challenge major title-winning teams rise to,” Terry said. “We know what it takes to win major titles and it is winning runs, periods when you keep on top, striding from result to result. If we beat Porto, we win the group with a game to go. Not many teams win in Porto but we can do it.

“Then it’s Arsenal and Manchester City in the league. Arsenal will be doing the maths; they are eight points behind with a game in hand. We’ve had some good results there since Wayne Bridge’s winner in the Champions League in 2004 and another one could cement our position at the top of the table.

“City are serious top-four contenders and, like Porto, are very strong at home. We have a great record there and these are the games when we can really make the difference. Victory, too, at Blackburn and we’re in the semi-finals. On the two occasions we’ve won the Carling Cup recently, we gone on to win the Premier League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2007. It’s the appetiser.”

England sweating on Terry as injury problems mount

• John Terry reported to have suffered achilles injury in training
• Capello still optimistic defender will play against Brazil

John Terry could miss England’s friendly against Brazil with a swollen achilles as injury problems mount for the manager Fabio Capello.

According to reports the captain was hurt during a training session when blocking a shot from Jermaine Jenas during their preparations for tomorrow’s match in Qatar. The 28-year-old centre-half was due to speak to the media at the Ritz Carlton Hotel today but did not emerge, leading to concerns over his fitness.

However, Capello said he remained optimistic that Terry would feature. “He has hurt his ankle and we need to check him but I think he will be okay,” the manager said. The Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry attended the press conference in Terry’s place.

The FA has not yet confirmed the injury while England’s medical team are yet to make a final decision on Terry.

England are already without Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Ashley Cole, Emile Heskey, Carlton Cole and David James for the match. Lampard flew home on Thursday after suffering a thigh injury in training.

It means only Wayne Rooney and Barry of Capello’s first-choice starting line-up are likely to feature against Brazil.

If Terry does miss out, Wayne Rooney could assume the captaincy given the number of senior players absent.
