Fergie – Roo is sensational

Sir Alex Ferguson branded Wayne Rooney ’sensational’ after the Manchester United striker helped rout AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

Rooney bagged a brace to take his personal tally for the season to 30 as the Red Devils romped to a 4-0 success to complete a memorable 7-2 aggregate triumph.

The display of the England international completely overshadowed the return of David Beckham to Old Trafford, with the midfielder remaining on the bench until the 64th minute.

Park Ji-Sung and Darren Fletcher were also on target for United as they cruised into the quarter-finals, but it was Rooney’s display which earned the manager’s praise.

He said: “It was a great bonus for me to take him off because he is still carrying a little bit of an injury. Nothing serious, but with a game coming up on Sunday it was a good moment for us.

“His performance was just a continuation of his form for the last two or three months.

“It is just sensational.”

Deciding factor

Rooney and United’s second goal came just seconds after the interval when he slotted home from Nani’s curling pass, which Ferguson felt was the pivotal moment in the match.

He added: “I think the deciding factor was the goal after half time.

“From that moment I think the tie was finished and we were able to relax and play good football and keep our concentration.

“Milan were forced to try and get something from the game and kept leaving us openings to attack. It was a difficult night for them after that.

“When you beat Milan 4-0, not many teams have ever done that, I don’t know if anyone has done that. It was a fantastic night for us.”

Red-hot Rooney routs Milan

Wayne Rooney reached 30 for the season as Manchester United booked their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a thumping 4-0 victory over AC Milan.

The England international headed home Gary Neville’s excellent cross from the right in the 13th minute to hand his side an early advantage and left Milan needing to score three times.

Milan had missed two good chances in the opening 10 minutes with Ronaldinho flashing a header narrowly wide before Klaas Jan Huntelaar failed to control Thiago Silva’s great ball over the defence.

Red-hot Rooney put the result beyond doubt in the very first minute of the second half, applying a deft finish to Nani’s superb pass from the left after Milan had gifted the ball to the flying winger.

Park Ji-Sung added a third in the 59th minute from Paul Scholes’ deft ball, firing across Christian Abbiati, with Darren Fletcher’s late header from Rafael’s cross completing a resounding 7-2 aggregate success.

David Beckham’s much-vaunted return to Old Trafford was rendered little more than a sideshow as he remained on the bench until the 64th minute, although one blistering volley from outside the area stung Edwin van der Sar’s palms.

Soared

Rooney’s two goals in the San Siro three weeks ago turned a tie on its head that appeared to be floating out of United’s reach. His latest effort merely rammed another nail in Milan’s coffin.

Neville was the provider for the first, curling over a right-wing cross his old friend Beckham would have been proud of.

Rooney soared between defenders and neatly glided the ball into the far corner.

It was his seventh header on the trot in a growing tally of goals that threatens the 42 which helped get Cristiano Ronaldo crowned as the world’s best player two years ago and the same accolades could easily be being bestowed on Rooney next winter.

Much will depend on the respective success enjoyed by United and England of course. But their talisman could not be doing any more and his second arrived 54 seconds after the restart.

An outstanding pass, delivered from the left-wing with the outside of his right-foot by Nani, provided the opportunity. Abbiati gave the game away by dashing out. Rooney merely prodded it past him.

Having already become only the second player – after Walter Pandiani – to score home and away against Milan in a European tie, Rooney was creating some kind of history by doing it twice.

Beckham

It was the end of Rooney’s contribution, although not United’s scoring.

After hinting at retirement a few weeks ago, Scholes appears to be enjoying something of a renaissance and it was his brilliantly disguised pass that was clinically finished by Park as the gap between these two European heavyweights widened to a gulf.

As there was little else to do, Leonardo introduced Beckham.

His arrival for Ignazio Abate triggered a standing ovation. Had the midfielder’s volley flashed past Van der Sar instead of being beaten away by the veteran Dutchman, it would probably have brought the biggest cheer of the night.

For all the adulation though, Beckham represents Manchester United’s past.

Rooney is the future, which on the pitch – where Fletcher nodded home a fourth near the end – looks rosy, despite the continued vocal and visual protests against the Glazer family, whose willingness to plunge United into such massive debt has vexed so many.

In the stands, the members of the Glazer family who had made the trip from Tampa, would need pretty thick skins to remain unaffected by all the vicious taunts.

With Beckham opting to put a green and gold scarf round his neck as he made his way down the tunnel, the abuse is not going to be silenced any time soon.

Becks salutes brilliant Rooney

David Beckham believes Wayne Rooney now ranks among the world’s best players after the Manchester United striker crushed AC Milan.

Rooney’s brace in the 4-0 thrashing of the Serie A side helped Sir Alex Ferguson’s men to a memorable 7-2 aggregate success and ruined Beckham’s Old Trafford homecoming seven years after his exit.

The England striker now has 30 goals for the season and is leading the Red Devils’ charge for Premier League and European glory after already helping them to claim the Carling Cup.

And Beckham believes the 24-year-old fully deserves to be ranked in the same standing as Barcelona ace Lionel Messi and former Old Trafford favourite Cristiano Ronaldo.

The best

He told Sky Sports: “He is one of the best in the world at the moment, if not the best.

“Wayne will continue to play like that because he is a passionate player, he is a young player, he wants to learn.

“With Messi and Ronaldo he is up there with the best, if not at the top.

“He has always scared defenders, whoever he has played for. He has always been a worry for any defender and any team. Let’s hope he continues that.”

It was an emotional evening for Beckham, but one that started on the bench before he was introduced to the fray in the 64th minute, by which time the match was well beyond Milan.

The former England captain saluted the Old Trafford fans who gave him a standing ovation and the self-confessed Red Devils fan wants his former club to claim a third Champions League success of Ferguson’s reign.

Unbelievable

He added: “It is always disappointing when you lose games, especially when they are as important as this, but we’ve come up against a great United side tonight.

“The thing that I will take is the reception I got from the fans, it was unbelievable.

“It meant a lot (coming back here). It’s definitely up there as one of my best nights, obviously without the result. The atmosphere, the occasion and everything that the fans gave to me tonight was unbelievable.

“I hope they go all the way again. They deserve to, it is a great club, a great fan base and a great manager. They deserve to go all the way.”

Burnley missed the chance to move out of the Premier League drop zone as they drew 1-1 with Stoke City at Turf Moor.

The Clarets, though, battled hard as they had to come from behind to claim a point.

Stoke went ahead midway through the first half when Tuncay Sanli headed home after an archetypal Rory Delap throw, deep into the box, was not dealt with.

But Brian Laws’ men were level not long into the the second half when David Nugent rose to head home a Martin Paterson cross.

The point means Burnley remain in the bottom three, but they have moved above Hull City and only goal difference is keeping Wolves above them. Stoke remain in 11th.

Early chance

Stoke almost made the breakthrough as early as the third minute when Abdoulaye Faye clipped a shot wide of the post following a corner from Liam Lawrence.

There followed a decent spell of pressure by Burnley but they could not take take advantage.

Danny Fox whipped in a free-kick that was diverted to safety by Danny Collins. Then Chris Eagles was set up by Martin Paterson in the 14th minute following a short spell of pressure by the home side.

However the former Manchester United midfielder sent his effort nearer the corner flag than the goal, much to his frustration.

Stoke again found themselves on the back foot when Jack Cork found space in the area but like Eagles failed to test Thomas Sorensen.

The visiting goalkeeper, however, then turned away a low drive from Fox in the 17th minute as Burnley stepped up the pace.

Stoke took the lead six minutes later following a long throw from Rory Delap. It was flicked on by Mamady Sidibe to Tuncay, who headed home.

Burnley came under pressure in the 31st minute when Matthew Etherington released Delap, only for Graham Alexander to show good positioning to block his shot.

Etherington then set up Tuncay in the area but his first touch was poor and Leon Cort was able to get the ball away.

Burnley hit back and Eagles delivered a cross to Paterson at the back post in the 39th minute. However he showed a lack of confidence and sent his effort weakly into the side-netting.

Stoke responded and Etherington latched on to a good ball from Andy Wilkinson and delivered it into the area – but Cort was able to clear.

Bright

Burnley, however, made a bright start to the second period and Eagles latched on to a pass from Nugent.

He skipped forward to the edge of the area only to go to ground following a challenge from Delap.

Eagles appealed for a free-kick but referee Howard Webb would have none of it and allowed play to continue.

Burnley stunned Stoke by drawing level in the 52nd minute with a goal out of nothing. Paterson turned Collins inside out before delivering a superb cross deep into the area.

Nugent was the first to react and left Sorensen stranded with a powerful header – his sixth goal for the club.

It was an open game now with both sides going for the win, rather than settling for a point.

Etherington tried to release Wilkinson in the 82nd minute but goalkeeper Brian Jensen anticipated, then a minute later substitute Dave Kitson made space for himself before rattling in a shot which tested Jensen.

Burnley came close to getting the winner in the closing moments of the game with Eagles sending a shot over the bar and substitute McDonald finding the wrong side of the post with his effort.

Storrie takes Pompey pay cut

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has taken a 40 per cent pay cut as 85 staff at the financially-crippled club were made redundant, but no players will be released.

Storrie, who has confirmed he will leave Fratton Park once a new owner is in place, has come under fire from some supporters unhappy with his role as the club slipped into administration.

Andrew Andronikou, spokesman for administrators UHY Hacker Young, revealed the cost-cutting measures with the 2008 FA Cup winners reported to be £70million in debt.

Andronikou claims he is receiving “enquiries on a daily basis” regarding a takeover and insisted the club will be able to stave off questions from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs over the validity of the administration process.

The administrator said regarding Storrie: “He would like to make it known that he has taken a 40 per cent cut in his basic wage.

“Peter Storrie has tended his resignation, he is working to a timetable. He is still chief executive today. It may very well change.

“We are in a situation where we are having to adapt to an evolving story.”

Players

Andronikou admitted, though, that representation from the Professional Footballers’ Association ruled out the possibility of releasing players to ease the wage bill and that he is reliant on individual players agreeing to wage cuts as a goodwill gesture.

“As regards the players, they are very much protected by the PFA. Unfortunately I am unable to make any cuts,” he said.

“One or two have discussed the possibility of reviewing their situation with the club but unless the players want to come forward and talk to you, I can’t really discuss the details.”

The biggest spectre hanging over the club, of course, remains the High Court proceedings brought by HMRC, who have also raised objections to the process by which the club entered administration.

Andronikou said: “We had a very constructive meeting with HMRC yesterday afternoon. The club has now provided HMRC with a detailed analysis of its financial transactions with Portpin Ltd (owner Balu Chainrai’s company).

“HMRC should now be satisfied that the said debenture is valid. We are hoping that this matter will be resolved shortly and are awaiting a written response.”

Enquiries

On the prospect of a takeover, he added: “The relevant documentation, including NDAs – non-disclosure agreements – and a sales memorandum have now been produced with anticipation of taking negotiations to sell the club forward. We are receiving enquiries on a daily basis.”

Regardless of the outcome of any talks, though, Andronikou maintained: “The club will certainly fulfil its fixture list this season and begin the new season in August 2010.

“We hope to meet with the Premier League in the very short term to discuss the matters that were left in abeyance last week (the imposition of a nine-point deduction for entering administration).

“The club will not be denied any money owed to it arising from its recent success in the FA Cup and will certainly take its place in the semi-finals.”

He added: “Today is extremely difficult – there’s always a day in the administration when you have to question whether you like the job you are doing, but it is a necessary job.

“We have unfortunately had to make 85 employees redundant today. The club had in its employment 166 full-time staff, including players, and 154 part-time staff – excluding weekend and matchday staff.”
